Florida Travel News

Fort Lauderdale, Florida -- Did you know that over 49.4 million Americans are vacation deprived, and 34 percent of employed U.S. adults don't use their vacation days? These dismal statistics are according to the 2009 Vacation Deprivation Survey conducted by Expedia.com*. The study also showed that despite earning the least amount of annual vacation days, Americans leave an average of three of those precious days unused. The end result: a nation seriously in need of relaxation and rejuvenation.

This year, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau (GFLCVB) is on a mission to help end vacation deprivation by urging Floridians to get away, hit the beach and take advantage of low-state-wide airfares and the destination's "Pack Your Bags, We're Staying Home" in-state program. "Pack Your Bags" includes discounts at popular hotels, 2-for-1 offers ranging from outdoor recreation to spa treatments to golf and an opportunity to enjoy SCUBA diving through a new "Learn to Dive" program that combines e-instruction, certification, free dives and free hotel stays.

"Instead of leaving time on the table, Floridians can take as many vacations as they want in Greater  Fort Lauderdale this summer without breaking the bank or even leaving the state," said Nicki E. Grossman, president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. "Airfares are unbeatable at this time of the year and our finest hotels have amazing summer rates."

By visiting www.sunny.org/Lauderdeals, summer planning is fast and easy. Sample "Pack Your Bags" hotel offers include upgrades and discounts on breakfast, parking and spa at The Atlantic Hotel on Fort Lauderdale Beach; 20 percent off rates at the Crowne Plaza Hollywood Beach Resort and breakfast for two and complimentary parking at the Hollywood Beach Marriott Hotel.

Sample 2-for-1 offers include:

* Museums: 2-for-1 admission at Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens and the Fort Lauderdale History Center;
* Golf: 2-for-1 greens fees at participating courses such as the Margate Executive, Orange-Brook Country Club and Oriole Golf & Tennis Club;
* Spa: two massages for the price of one with a friend or partner at Planet Massage and the Spa at the Westin Diplomat Resort;
* Nature: 2-for-1 admission to Butterfly World, Flamingo Gardens and airboat tours at Sawgrass Recreation Park;
* Water Sports: 2-for-1 snorkeling trips with South Florida Diving Headquarters and Pro Dive, or enjoy an extra hour of kayaking with the Atlantic Coast Kayak Company

And, for those who want to take up SCUBA diving, Greater Fort Lauderdale's new "Learn to Dive" program offers e-learner instruction, a free certification dive and a fourth night free hotel stay during the month of June at participating properties.
