Miami, Florida -- Since January 12, 2009, all travelers from countries in the Visa Waiver Program are required to pre-register online before entering the United States. Travelers can apply for authorization online at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/, where they are asked to provide information similar to what is currently submitted on a green I-94W form on arrival in the US.
These details include passport data and where the applicant intends to stay upon arrival (this can be amended at a later stage). The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) checks the information against law enforcement databases and provides one of three responses almost instantaneously: ‘Authorization Approved,’ ‘Travel Not Approved’ or ‘Authorization Pending’. The new procedures are part of the Department of Homeland Security’s Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). For additional details about ESTA, and application procedures, visit one of the following web sites: http://www.travel.state.gov/ or https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/.
